Business

Kaneko Seeds Co., Ltd. is a comprehensive agriculture-related company founded in 1947. It operates four segments: the Seeds & Seedlings Business (domestic and overseas sales of vegetable and forage seeds), the Agricultural Materials Business (nationwide sales of agrochemicals and coated fertilizers), the Facility Materials Business (design and construction of agricultural materials and hydroponic cultivation plants and greenhouses), and the Flowers Business (flower seedlings and gardening materials for home gardening and commercial growers). Its main customers include farmers, agricultural corporations, home centers, and specialty gardening stores. The company has overseas subsidiaries in the Philippines and Thailand, and is also promoting seed and seedling exports to Southeast Asia and South Asia. It is listed on the Standard Market of the Tokyo Stock Exchange.

Business Model

Revenue is driven by the Agricultural Materials segment (net sales of ¥31,952 million) and the Facility Materials segment (¥14,659 million), complemented by the Seeds and Seedlings segment (¥9,480 million) and the Flowers segment (¥8,417 million). In the Seeds and Seedlings segment, the company sells proprietary bred varieties both domestically and overseas, while the Agricultural Materials and Facility Materials segments secure scale through a wide-area distribution model centered on purchase-and-resale operations. Breeding capability, backed by R&D expenditure of ¥942 million, is the source of differentiation.

Company Strengths

In FY2025 (ended May 2025), at the National Vegetable Variety Examination Meeting, onion variety "Yellow Drop" and Chinese cabbage variety "Kigo" received the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Export and International Affairs Bureau Director-General's Award. Komatsuna (Japanese mustard spinach) variety "Hissen 007" received the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Award. In the flower category, carnation variety "Terumi" received the Japan Flower Selection's top award, Flower of the Year, demonstrating that the company's high varietal competitiveness has been recognized by public institutions.

The company operates four segments—seeds and seedlings, agricultural materials, facility materials, and flowers—with the largest segment, agricultural materials (net sales of ¥31,952 million), accounting for approximately 49% of the total, while facility materials, seeds and seedlings, and flowers complement it in a diversified structure. Leveraging a nationwide sales network and branch network, the company serves a diverse customer base including farmers, home centers, and specialty gardening stores.

Through Philippinas Kaneko Seeds Corporation (a consolidated subsidiary, established in 1982) and Kaneko Seeds Thailand (a non-consolidated subsidiary, established in 1990), the company conducts overseas seed production and local sales. Exports of onion, pumpkin, and cabbage seeds to Southeast Asia and South Asia have been growing, and seeds and seedlings segment sales in FY2025 (ended May 2025) reached ¥9,480 million, up 4.0% year on year.

ENVALITH's Perspective

In FY2026 (ending May 2026), the agricultural materials business (driven by increased herbicide demand due to warming, expansion of paddy rice agents, and front-loaded demand) and the facility materials business (steady delivery of agricultural materials) led growth, with operating profit improving for the second consecutive period to ¥1,749 million (up 15.7% year on year). However, the operating profit margin remained low at 2.6%, and the low-margin, high-volume structure with a cost of sales ratio of approximately 85% has not changed. External factors such as global warming and climate change are largely responsible for boosting demand for agricultural materials, and it is necessary to monitor the progress of the company's own value-added improvement measures to assess structural profitability improvement.

In FY2026 (ending May 2026), capital expenditures for tangible fixed assets expanded to ¥1,998 million (up 71.7% year on year), with construction in progress surging from ¥719 million to ¥2,152 million. Funding needs associated with the rebuilding of the head office were covered by short-term borrowings of ¥800 million, resulting in the emergence of interest-bearing debt that was zero in the prior period. Operating cash flow improved significantly to ¥1,924 million, but investing cash flow was roughly offsetting at ¥-1,994 million, and further cost increases are expected in the next fiscal year (FY2027, ending May 2027) due to the rebuilding of the annex building. Free cash flow is at nearly zero, and the trend in financial capacity warrants continued monitoring.

The flower business turned profitable, swinging from a loss of ¥2 million in the prior period to a profit of ¥68 million, owing to increased sales of high-value-added flower seeds for commercial cultivation overseas and a revision of the product mix, which can be evaluated positively. Meanwhile, in the seed and seedling business, despite a 1.0% year-on-year increase in sales, segment profit declined 3.0% year on year due to rising overseas production costs from the weak yen and the promotion of disposal of lower-quality seeds. As an external factor, as long as the weak yen continues, the pressure on profitability in the seed and seedling business may persist, and attention should be paid to the progress of countermeasures such as diversifying seed production areas and raising the ratio of domestic seed production.

Growth Strategy

Under the basic policy of "high technology and internationalization," the company is promoting global variety development, domestic agricultural DX, and smart agriculture.

Exports and domestic sales of onion seeds have progressed favorably, and sales of forage crop seeds have grown against a backdrop of rising demand for domestically produced feed. For FY2027 (ending May 2027), the company expects further growth in vegetable seed sales, led by exports. Progress in variety development for Southeast Asian and South Asian markets is key to medium- to long-term export expansion.

Through increased overseas export sales of high value-added flower seeds for commercial cultivation, such as eustoma and delphinium, and a revision of the product mix, the floriculture business turned profitable in FY2026 (ending May 2026). For FY2027 (ending May 2026 (ending May 2027), the company also expects increased export sales of eustoma, delphinium, and other varieties, aiming for further improvement in profitability.

By capturing increased opportunities for herbicide spraying and expanding demand for paddy rice agents driven by global warming, the agricultural materials business achieved a 8.1% year-on-year increase in revenue and a 11.7% increase in profit in FY2026 (ending May 2026). For FY2027 (ending May 2027), the company expects continued growth in sales of pest control agents such as herbicides and insecticides, driven by the effects of warming. This segment is expected to continue serving as the group's largest pillar of stable profit contribution.

By capturing increased demand for agricultural materials to address changes in cultivation environments caused by climate change, the facility materials business achieved a 4.1% year-on-year increase in revenue and a 30.5% increase in profit in FY2026 (ending May 2026). For FY2027 (ending May 2027), the company expects continued growth in sales of agricultural materials. Improved profitability will also be pursued in parallel through the continued promotion of operational efficiency.

With the rebuilding of the head office building, construction in progress expanded to ¥2,152 million, and capital expenditures on property, plant and equipment reached ¥1,998 million in FY2026 (ending May 2026). For FY2027 (ending May 2027), the company also expects increased expenses associated with the rebuilding of the annex. While this will weigh on profits in the short term, it is positioned as an investment for medium- to long-term operational efficiency and productivity improvement.
