TANABE CONSULTING GROUP CO.,LTD. 2Q Earnings Preview

Interim Results to Gauge How Far Double-Digit Growth in HR and Strategy Can Beat the Unchanged 1H Plan

PublishedNovember 6, 2026 at 15:30 GMT+9

Summary

1Q revenue rose across all five domains, and revenue and operating income hit record highs. Even so, the company kept its 1H plan unchanged. On our estimates, delivering only the plan would leave standalone 2Q (Jul–Sep) revenue and operating income below the prior-year level. Whether 1Q momentum carries into 2Q is therefore the key focus of the 2Q results.

On profitability, human capital investment keeps expanding and goodwill amortization from M&A is rising. Against that backdrop, we want to see how far the company can restore OPM in standalone 2Q, a quarter that delivered high margins last year.

In August, the company resolved to acquire a majority stake in US-based Actus Consulting Group. Disclosure of the consolidation start date and whether the deal is reflected in guidance will help us assess the growth M&A strategy under the medium-term management plan "TCG Future Vision 2030."

Key Points for Next Quarter

Key Points & FocusImplications

Plan ProgressUpside to the company's 1H revenue and recurring profit plans; any guidance revision

1Q revenue represents 47.5% of the 1H plan of JPY 8,100M (our estimate). Delivering only the plan implies standalone 2Q revenue of -2.3% YoY (our estimate), so the focus is on upside potential.

ProfitabilityYoY trend in standalone 2Q OPM; SG&A growth

1Q OPM was 7.4%, versus 16.4% in standalone 2Q last year (our estimate). The test of profit growth is whether the company can absorb 1Q SG&A growth of +19.6% and beat its 1H operating income plan of JPY 910M.

Growth by DomainYoY revenue by domain, led by HR and Strategy & Domain

In 1Q, HR grew +27.8% and Strategy & Domain grew +17.6%. Whether double-digit growth holds through 1H will drive upside to the full-year revenue plan of JPY 17,200M.

Growth M&AActus Consulting Group: consolidation start date, goodwill recognized, and non-controlling interests

Goodwill stood at JPY 1,479M at end-1Q, and quarterly net loss attributable to non-controlling interests was JPY -25M. We want to assess both the earnings contribution from M&A and the amortization burden.

Key Issues from Previous Results (FY3/2027 1Q Results)

1Q revenue was JPY 3,844M (+16.5%) and operating income was JPY 285M (+18.9%), both record highs for the period. The company kept its 1H and full-year plans announced on May 13, 2026. 2Q results will test the gap between 1Q momentum and the plan, the margin recovery, and progress on growth M&A. The medium-term management plan targets revenue of JPY 25B and ROE of 15% for FY3/2031.

1. Upside to the 1H Plan

  • Prior Quarter: 1Q revenue of JPY 3,844M represents 47.5% of the 1H plan of JPY 8,100M (our estimate). In the prior-year period, 1Q revenue represented 43.1% of actual 1H revenue (our estimate).
  • Prior Quarter: Recurring profit of JPY 292M represents 32.1% of the 1H plan of JPY 910M (our estimate).
  • To Watch This Quarter: Meeting the 1H plan requires standalone 2Q revenue of only JPY 4,256M, -2.3% versus JPY 4,356M a year earlier (our estimate). The plan leaves room for upside, and we want to see how the company handles guidance at 2Q results.
  • To Watch This Quarter: The company cites an increase in advances received. "Other" current liabilities stood at JPY 2,100M at end-1Q (JPY 1,604M at prior fiscal year-end). We will track this as a leading indicator of orders.
  • Key Metrics: 1H revenue and recurring profit vs. plan and YoY; any guidance revision; and the balance of "Other" current liabilities.

2. Standalone 2Q Margin vs. Investment Burden

  • Prior Quarter: Gross profit margin improved to 47.7% (+1.2pt). However, SG&A rose to JPY 1,548M (+19.6%), leaving OPM at 7.4% (+0.2pt).
  • Prior Quarter: Goodwill amortization increased to JPY 45M (JPY 28M a year earlier), and depreciation to JPY 53M (JPY 32M a year earlier).
  • To Watch This Quarter: The 1H plan implies standalone 2Q OPM of 14.7%, below the prior-year actual of 16.4% (both our estimates). The key question is how far revenue growth can absorb fixed costs while the company continues to invest in human capital and AX/DX.
  • To Watch This Quarter: In 1Q, quarterly net income fell -3.1%, while quarterly net income attributable to owners of parent rose +25.9%. Income taxes rose to JPY 157M (JPY 98M a year earlier). We will check the breakdown of extraordinary items and income taxes for 1H as well.
  • Key Metrics: 1H operating income vs. the JPY 910M plan; gross profit margin; and SG&A YoY.

3. Sustainability of Revenue Growth by Domain

  • Prior Quarter: HR posted JPY 824M (+27.8%), Strategy & Domain JPY 800M (+17.6%), and Brand & PR JPY 759M (+15.7%).
  • Prior Quarter: Digital/DX posted JPY 642M (+13.4%) and Finance/M&A JPY 777M (+9.2%). Prior-year figures reflect the reclassified domain structure.
  • To Watch This Quarter: HR is benefiting from strong demand for HR compensation system redesign and corporate university setup support. PeaceMind's stress-check services and similar offerings book revenue mainly in 3Q, so their 2Q contribution will be limited.
  • To Watch This Quarter: "AI Management Implementation Consulting," launched on October 7, 2026, will only contribute from 3Q onward. At 2Q results, we want to hear management's commentary on demand trends.
  • Key Metrics: 1H revenue by domain YoY, particularly growth in HR and Digital/DX.

4. Growth M&A Progress and Consolidation Impact

  • Prior Quarter: Goodwill was JPY 1,479M at end-1Q (JPY -45M vs. prior fiscal year-end). Cash on hand comprised JPY 6,298M in cash and deposits and JPY 500M in securities.
  • Prior Quarter: Under the medium-term plan, the company aims to generate JPY 2–3B of its FY3/2031 revenue target of JPY 25B through growth M&A, deploying at least JPY 3B of cash on hand.
  • To Watch This Quarter: We will check the closing date and consolidation start date for the majority stake in Actus Consulting Group, approved on August 19. Another focus is whether only the balance sheet is consolidated at end-2Q, with the P/L reflected from 3Q onward.
  • To Watch This Quarter: We want to confirm the goodwill amount and whether the deal is built into the full-year plan. Whether the JPY -25M quarterly net loss attributable to non-controlling interests recorded in 1Q persists will also affect the earnings outlook.
  • Key Metrics: Goodwill balance and non-controlling interests at end-2Q; goodwill amortization; and interim net income attributable to owners of parent vs. the JPY 575M plan.
