MITANI SANGYO CO.,LTD. 2Q Earnings Flash

Air-conditioning installation and chemicals drove record 1H revenue and record profit at every level. With operating income at 61.7% of full-year guidance, the focus now shifts to a 2H order recovery and the company's response to Middle East developments.

PublishedOctober 30, 2026 at 20:03 GMT+9

Key Positives From The 2Q Results

Revenue was essentially flat at JPY 56,780M (+0.3% YoY), but gross profit rose to JPY 11,578M (+7.2% YoY). Operating income reached JPY 1,850M (+9.2% YoY). Revenue and every profit line hit interim records. Profit growth came mainly from air-conditioning installation, where the company has moved toward higher value-added work, and from chemicals, where it used its procurement strength to offer substitute products.

  • Gross Margin Expansion
: GPM improved to 20.4% (+1.3pt YoY). Despite flat revenue, the JPY 782M increase in gross profit more than absorbed higher SG&A.
  • Air-Conditioning Installation
: Operating income rose to JPY 1,463M (+50.1% YoY), a record for the third consecutive period. Large new-build projects in Hokuriku progressed smoothly, and a richer project mix also helped.
  • Chemicals
: Operating income grew +31.0%. The company proposed substitute chemical products amid Middle East tensions. In precious metal recovery, it turned low-content waste into saleable material, lifting volumes.
  • Housing Equipment Orders
: Orders received rose +16.9% and the order backlog +18.5%. The company won its largest-ever
    INTENZA®
project, giving stronger visibility on revenue from 2H onward.
  • Guidance Progress Rate
: Operating income reached 61.7% of the full-year plan (our estimate), ahead of 50.1% a year earlier. With guidance unchanged, this leaves room for upside.

Key Concerns From The 2Q Results

1H profit growth was concentrated in Q1. Standalone Q2 operating income fell to JPY 860M (-33.5% YoY, our estimate). Operating cash flow shrank to JPY 45M (vs. JPY 2,160M a year earlier). Orders also declined in Information Systems and Air-Conditioning Installation, so the sustainability of profits from 2H onward needs to be confirmed.

  • Q2 Slowdown
: Standalone Q2 revenue was JPY 29,424M (-5.0% YoY, our estimate). The 1H profit increase came mainly from a sharp Q1 gain, and quarterly momentum has slowed.
  • Resin & Electronics
: Revenue grew, but operating income fell -31.7%. Higher logistics costs tied to the Middle East situation and upfront investment for business expansion weighed on profits.
  • Information Systems Orders
: Orders received fell -35.5% and the backlog -14.2%. The payback from the large NEXTGIGA School projects could spill over into 2H revenue.
  • Cash Flow
: Operating CF shrank on a JPY -1,101M inventory build, and FCF was JPY -1,509M (our estimate). The shortfall was funded with additional short-term borrowings.
  • Net Income
: Net income grew only +3.3%. A JPY 566M gain on sale of investment securities provided support, but income taxes rose to JPY 1,045M (vs. JPY 640M a year earlier).

Focus Areas / Items To Monitor Going Forward

  • The full-year plan implies 2H operating income of JPY 1,150M (-31.8% vs. prior-year 2H, our estimate). We want to understand how much Middle East risk is baked in. Given the Q3-weighted seasonality, we also want to gauge the scope for upside.
  • Order declines in Air-Conditioning Installation (orders -24.9%) and Information Systems (orders -35.5%) could weigh on revenue from next fiscal year. The key question is the project pipeline after NEXTGIGA School, including education DX and core-system replacements.
  • UGS Asset Management, which filed a large-shareholding report, is targeting an early recovery to 1x PBR. With JPY 36,471M in investment securities on the balance sheet, we will watch how the company addresses capital efficiency and shareholder returns.
Discussion Points For Management
  • The Middle East scenario for 2H underpinning the unchanged guidance, and the profit outlook by segment
  • The nature, scale, and expected monetization timing of upfront investment in the Resin & Electronics Business
  • What drove the JPY 1,351M increase in long-term prepaid expenses, and its role in the business
  • Plans to reduce investment securities holdings, the ROE target, and specific capital policy measures to improve PBR
  • Revenue recognition timing for the
    INTENZA®
backlog, and the path to profitability for the Housing Equipment Business

Performance By Business Segment

Four of the six reportable segments posted revenue growth. Strong Performers
  • Air-Conditioning Installation: Revenue +11.3%, operating income +50.1%. Progress on large new-build projects in Hokuriku, combined with higher value-added new-build work, lifted margins.
  • Chemicals: Revenue +7.3%. Higher utilization at electronic component customers in Japan and Vietnam boosted demand. MAFF approval also drove growing demand for contract manufacturing of functional materials.
  • Energy: Operating income +33.1%. Tight supply-demand for industrial fuels amid Middle East tensions raised unit margins. Residential LPG volumes also grew, driven by restaurant and housing customers.
  • Overseas Revenue: Up +15.9%, lifting its share of total revenue to 14.6%. This likely reflects higher chemical product sales in Vietnam and a weaker yen boosting translated resin molding sales.
Underperformers
  • Information Systems: Revenue -30.9%. Core-system replacement work progressed smoothly, but the high base from prior-year NEXTGIGA School deliveries created a large drag.
  • Resin & Electronics: Production of molded parts, including automotive applications, ran smoothly and revenue grew. However, higher logistics costs and investment for future expansion weighed heavily, and operating income fell -31.7%.
  • Housing Equipment: Revenue fell -7.3% against a high base from large equipment deliveries in the Tokyo metropolitan area a year earlier. Moving the existing business toward higher value-added offerings narrowed the loss by JPY 20M.
  • APIs (Within Chemicals): Revenue declined against a high base from large-lot sales of proprietary products a year earlier.

Progress Versus Full-Year Guidance

1H operating income reached 61.7% of the full-year plan, versus 50.1% of full-year actuals at the same point last year (our estimates). The plan implies 2H operating income of JPY 1,150M (-31.8% vs. JPY 1,685M in prior-year 2H). Historically, standalone Q3 has been seasonally strong, so the plan looks well within reach. However, standalone Q2 profit declined, and the impact of the Middle East situation and weaker orders will be the key 2H issues.

  • 1H Weighting
: Last fiscal year, 1H accounted for 48.2% of revenue and 50.1% of operating income (our estimates). The 1H/2H skew is small.
  • Q3 Strength
: Over the past three fiscal years, standalone Q3 operating income ranged from JPY 474M to JPY 1,240M and was the core of 2H profit. Standalone Q4 has tended to be limited to JPY 388M–445M.

Changes To Guidance

Full-year guidance is unchanged: revenue of JPY 113,000M, operating income of JPY 3,000M, recurring profit of JPY 3,900M, and net income of JPY 2,600M. The company had assumed that temporary disruption from the Middle East situation would subside within 1H, with conditions normalizing in 2H. Supply chain disruption and procurement cost increases in 1H were smaller than expected. However, management still views the outlook as uncertain and will disclose promptly if a material impact is expected.

Commentary On Shareholder Returns

The company revised its dividend forecast. The interim dividend was raised to JPY 6.00 (vs. JPY 5.00 a year earlier). Combined with a JPY 8.00 year-end dividend, the full-year forecast is JPY 14.00 (vs. JPY 13.00 last fiscal year). This implies a payout ratio of 33.2% on forecast EPS of JPY 42.23 (our estimate). No share buyback was mentioned.

Financial Position

The balance sheet remains sound, with an equity ratio of 56.1%. In 1H, funding needs rose due to higher working capital and the acquisition of long-term prepaid expenses. These were financed with short-term borrowings, raising interest-bearing debt.
