Summary
1Q operating income came in at JPY 12,259M, or 61.3% of the 1H plan of JPY 20,000M (our estimate). Meeting the 1H plan requires only JPY 7,741M in standalone 2Q operating income, below the JPY 9,404M posted in 2Q of the prior year (our estimate). The key questions for 2Q results are therefore how far 1H results will beat plan and whether the company will revise its unchanged full-year guidance. On earnings drivers, we will look at whether two trends carried into 2Q. The first is domestic precious metals recycling, with higher recovery volumes in electronics and catalysts and better profitability in jewelry and dental. The second is higher mine receipts at the North American refining business. We will also check whether financial costs keep falling. Finally, we want to understand why borrowings rose on the balance sheet while the cash flow statement shows net repayments, as a gauge of earnings quality and financial stability.
Key Points for Next Quarter
| Key Points & Focus | Implications |
|---|---|
Earnings ProgressCumulative 1H operating income vs. 1H plan; any guidance revision | Standalone 2Q operating income needed to reach the 1H plan of JPY 20,000M is JPY 7,741M (our estimate). This is below both the prior-year 2Q standalone figure of JPY 9,404M and the preceding quarter's JPY 12,259M. The focus is the size of the upside and whether guidance is revised. |
Domestic Precious Metals RecyclingRecovery volumes and profitability in electronics, jewelry, dental and catalysts | 1Q precious metals segment profit was JPY 11,788M (+110.1%). Jewelry and dental grew profit despite lower recovery volumes. We will check whether this margin improvement persists. |
North American RefiningGold/silver feedstock receipts from mines, product sales volumes, trading arbitrage opportunities | In 1Q, refining and products grew profit on higher volumes, while trading profit edged down. Whether volume-driven growth continues will determine the visibility of the full-year operating income plan of JPY 41,000M (+10.8%). |
Net Financial IncomeNet financial income/costs; profit before tax vs. 1H plan | 1Q net financial income was +JPY 156M (prior year: -JPY 940M). The 1H plan sets profit before tax at JPY 19,500M, JPY 500M below the operating income plan, which implies a net financial cost. |
Balance Sheet & Cash FlowOperating CF, bonds and borrowings balance, cash flow hedge movements | 1Q operating CF was an inflow of JPY 57,069M. However, bonds and borrowings rose JPY 70,892M from the prior fiscal year-end. The ratio of equity attributable to owners of parent fell to 35.3% (prior year-end: 37.5%). |
Key Issues from Previous Results (FY3/27 1Q Results)
1Q revenue was JPY 197,177M (+43.8%) and operating income was JPY 12,259M (+106.8%). Within the precious metals business, both domestic recycling and North American refining grew profit. The company kept the guidance it announced on May 1, 2026 unchanged, so the central issue is progress against the 1H and full-year plans. The earnings release makes no reference to mid-term business plan targets. This report therefore uses the company's 1H and full-year plans as the benchmark.
1. Progress Against 1H Plan and Possible Guidance Revision
- Previous Quarter: 1Q operating income of JPY 12,259M represented 61.3% of the 1H plan of JPY 20,000M (our estimate). Quarterly profit attributable to owners of parent of JPY 8,612M equated to 61.5% of the 1H plan of JPY 14,000M (our estimate).
- To Verify This Quarter: Standalone 2Q operating income of JPY 7,741M is needed to meet the 1H plan (our estimate). We will check which 2Q slowdown factors the company's plan assumes. We will also check whether guidance is revised if results come in ahead.
- Key Metrics: Cumulative 1H operating income vs. the 1H plan of JPY 20,000M. Standalone 2Q operating income vs. JPY 9,404M in the prior-year quarter and JPY 12,259M in the preceding quarter (our estimate).
2. Recovery Volumes and Profitability in Domestic Precious Metals Recycling
- Previous Quarter: Electronics and catalysts both grew profit, on higher gold and palladium recovery volumes respectively. Jewelry and dental saw lower gold recovery volumes but still grew profit. Better profitability, market share gains and an improved cost structure drove the increase.
- To Verify This Quarter: We will check whether margin improvement in segments with lower recovery volumes reflects structural initiatives rather than one-off factors. Another focus is whether sales volumes of premium-priced recycled precious metals and retail precious metal products keep growing.
- Key Metrics: YoY changes in recovery volumes and operating income by segment, as disclosed in the earnings release and supplementary materials. YoY change in precious metals segment profit.
3. Sustainability of Volume Growth in North American Refining
- Previous Quarter: Refining grew profit on higher gold/silver feedstock receipts from mines, and products grew profit on higher sales volumes. Trading profit edged down on fewer arbitrage opportunities. Warehousing was flat YoY.
- To Verify This Quarter: We will check whether higher mine receipts continued into 2Q. We also want to see whether trading arbitrage opportunities recover or narrow further.
- Key Metrics: Management's explanation of YoY changes in operating income by segment. Precious metals segment profit vs. JPY 11,788M in the preceding quarter.
4. Improved Net Financial Income and Its Impact on Profit Before Tax and EPS
- Previous Quarter: Financial costs fell to JPY 460M (prior year: JPY 1,273M), lifting quarterly profit before tax by +148.8%, ahead of operating income growth. Interest paid, however, rose to JPY 426M (prior year: JPY 85M).
- To Verify This Quarter: We will review the breakdown of financial costs and the trend in interest expense as borrowings rise. Average shares outstanding increased to 85,944,518 (prior year: 76,613,404). Investors should note the resulting gap between net income growth (+136.6%) and EPS growth (+110.9%, our estimate).
- Key Metrics: Profit before tax vs. the 1H plan of JPY 19,500M. Profit attributable to owners of parent vs. the 1H plan of JPY 14,000M, and basic EPS vs. the 1H forecast of JPY 162.90. Trend in income tax expense.
5. Working Capital, Borrowings and Cash Flow Hedges
- Previous Quarter: Operating CF was an inflow of JPY 57,069M (prior year: JPY 508M). A JPY 14,741M decrease in inventories and a JPY 84,816M increase in operating payables and other liabilities drove the inflow. Meanwhile, total current and non-current bonds and borrowings rose JPY 70,892M from the prior fiscal year-end.
- To Verify This Quarter: Financing CF showed a net decrease in borrowings, yet the balance sheet figure rose. We want to identify what drove this gap. Cash flow hedges of -JPY 9,012M pushed quarterly comprehensive income to -JPY 194M, so we will also check the impact on equity.
- Key Metrics: Bonds and borrowings at end-2Q (end-1Q: current JPY 153,175M, non-current JPY 100,919M). Cumulative 1H operating CF (prior year: -JPY 49,074M) and the ratio of equity attributable to owners of parent (end-1Q: 35.3%).
Key Timely Disclosures During the Period
- 2026/09/30Asahi Metalfine signed an absorption-type company split agreement to take over Docomo SMTB Net Bank's gold accumulation plan business. The deal expands the retail precious metals and wealth-building services of this wholly owned subsidiary. The effective date is scheduled for May 6, 2027. It will not affect 2Q or 3Q earnings and becomes a monitoring item from 1Q FY3/28 onward.
Previous Quarter Results (FY3/27 1Q Actual)
The company is a pure holding company.
