Summary
Recurring profit for 1H already exceeded the full-year plan. Even so, the company has kept its guidance unchanged. 3Q is therefore the first quarter in which any gap between the plan's 2H assumptions and actual results will surface. The key focus is the Entertainment business. After a 1H packed with large-scale concerts, we want to see whether 3Q on a standalone basis can match the prior-year 3Q in revenue scale and concert profitability. The DearU share transfer, executed on July 27, 2026, is expected to generate a JPY 827M gain on sale of investment securities in 3Q. This could materially affect quarterly Net Income Attributable to Owners of Parent Company and any decision to revise full-year guidance. We will also look for a profit recovery in the Rights & Media business and an unwind of the receivables and payables that built up in 1H. Together, these will help gauge earnings quality.
Key Points for Next Quarter
| Key Points & Focus | Implications |
|---|---|
Entertainment Business9M cumulative segment revenue and profit YoY | 1H revenue rose +33.3% and segment profit +71.2%, with a 9.6% margin (our estimate). The key question is whether 3Q standalone can sustain business scale in line with prior-year 3Q consolidated revenue of JPY 2,596M (our estimate). |
Full-Year Plan9M cumulative recurring profit progress vs. the full-year plan, and any guidance revision | 1H recurring profit of JPY 271M represents 105.4% of the JPY 257M full-year plan (our estimate). If the plan holds, 2H implies recurring profit of -JPY 14M (our estimate). The size of 3Q's standalone profit will therefore inform any revision. |
Extraordinary Gains/LossesClassification of the DearU share sale gain and its impact on quarterly Net Income Attributable to Owners of Parent Company | The JPY 827M gain (company disclosure) exceeds 3x the full-year net income plan of JPY 253M. We will check the net amount after the portion attributable to non-controlling interests and income taxes. |
Rights & Media BusinessExtent of segment profit recovery | In 1H, revenue rose +6.8%, but segment profit was only JPY 4M (vs. JPY 134M a year earlier). We will check whether cost control shows up in 9M cumulative profit. |
Working Capital / LiquidityPeriod-end balances of accounts receivable, accounts payable, and cash and deposits | At end-June, accounts receivable stood at JPY 7,019M (+JPY 1,506M vs. prior fiscal year-end) and cash and deposits at JPY 3,259M. We will monitor the normalization of balances as receivables from large-scale concerts are collected and sale proceeds are received. |
Key Issues from Previous Results (FY12/2026 2Q Results)
1H drew 730,000 attendees across 41 performances. Revenue came in at JPY 6,170M (+26.8%) and recurring profit at JPY 271M (+90.4%). Recurring profit has already exceeded the full-year plan. Under its medium-term management plan, the company aims to multiply and layer ancillary revenue streams and transform into an owner of proprietary IP. It is at an early stage of diversifying revenue, including in-house music production and offering its travel platform to third parties. 3Q is the point where three issues converge: concert sustainability, treatment of the plan, and recognition of one-off gains.
1. Sustainability of Scale and Profitability in the Entertainment Business
- Prior Period: 1H segment revenue was JPY 4,895M (+33.3%) and segment profit JPY 467M (+71.2%).
- Prior Period: The margin rose to 9.6% from 7.4% a year earlier (our estimate). The company attributes the improvement in standalone concert profitability to a strict focus on right-sized events.
- This Quarter: 2Q standalone revenue was JPY 2,966M, down from JPY 3,204M in 1Q (our estimate). 1H was concentrated with the Nissan Stadium shows and aespa's dome tour. We want to see what level 3Q performance count and attendance reach after that peak.
- This Quarter: Whether ancillary businesses such as advertising and film appearances support results between concert cycles will help gauge progress toward a "revenue base not dependent on concerts."
- Key Metrics: 9M cumulative segment revenue and profit YoY, segment profit margin (1H: 9.6%), and disclosure of performance count and attendance.
2. Conservatism of the Full-Year Plan and 3Q Standalone P&L
- Prior Period: The full-year plan was left unchanged at revenue of JPY 9,089M (-10.8%) and recurring profit of JPY 257M (+32.4%). 1H progress rates were 67.9% for revenue and 105.4% for recurring profit (our estimate).
- Prior Period: If the plan holds, 2H implies revenue of JPY 2,919M and recurring profit of -JPY 14M (our estimate). This 2H revenue would be 45.2% below the prior-year 2H figure of JPY 5,328M (our estimate).
- This Quarter: 2Q standalone operating income was -JPY 3M, down from JPY 235M in 1Q (our estimate). Whether 3Q standalone can deliver a profit similar to prior-year 3Q operating income of JPY 87M (our estimate) will indicate how conservative the plan is.
- This Quarter: In the prior fiscal year, 4Q standalone operating income was also -JPY 52M (our estimate). We want to hear how much 2H seasonality the company has built into its plan.
- Key Metrics: 9M cumulative recurring profit progress vs. the JPY 257M full-year plan, 3Q standalone revenue and operating income YoY, and any guidance revision.
3. 3Q Recognition of the DearU Share Sale Gain and Its Impact on Net Income
- Prior Period: The company disclosed a material subsequent event. Consolidated subsidiary Everything Japan transferred 360,000 DearU shares on July 27. The buyer was SM ENTERTAINMENT Co., Ltd., and the gain on sale of investment securities was JPY 827M.
- Prior Period: In 1H, recurring profit rose +90.4%, while interim Net Income Attributable to Owners of Parent Company fell -27.8%. Company disclosures confirm this reflects the absence of a JPY 230M gain on reversal of stock acquisition rights booked a year earlier.
- This Quarter: We will check the classification of the gain and the amount of income taxes recognized. Deferred tax liabilities stood at JPY 219M at end-June.
- This Quarter: Non-controlling interests were JPY 254M at end-June. Part of the gain may be attributable to non-controlling shareholders, so we want to confirm the net amount attributable to owners of the parent.
- This Quarter: The company says it is "examining" the impact on full-year guidance. The focus is whether it revises its net income plan of JPY 253M and EPS forecast of JPY 2.19.
- Key Metrics: 9M cumulative extraordinary gains and income taxes, quarterly net income attributable to non-controlling interests, quarterly Net Income Attributable to Owners of Parent Company vs. the full-year plan, and investment securities balance (JPY 799M at end-June).
4. Profit Recovery in the Rights & Media Business
- Prior Period: 1H segment revenue was JPY 1,275M (+6.8%) and segment profit JPY 4M (-96.5%). The margin fell to 0.4% from 11.3% a year earlier (our estimate).
- Prior Period: Four premium content titles leveraging group IP were broadcast, delivering some success in viewer retention and churn prevention. However, rising production costs and FX remain areas to watch.
- This Quarter: We want to see how far risk-sharing through co-investment and cost control are reflected in 9M cumulative segment profit.
- This Quarter: Consolidated Gross Profit Margin was 18.6% in 1H, below 21.5% a year earlier (our estimate). How much content costs contributed to this decline is another issue.
- Key Metrics: 9M cumulative segment profit YoY, trend in consolidated Gross Profit Margin, and balance of program inventory and content business rights (JPY 1,879M at end-June).
5. Working Capital Unwind and Cash on Hand
- Prior Period: 1H operating CF was -JPY 198M (vs. +JPY 2,052M a year earlier). Trade receivables rose by JPY 1,506M and other current assets by JPY 441M, more than offsetting the JPY 1,064M increase in trade payables.
- Prior Period: Cash and deposits were JPY 3,259M, down JPY 444M from the prior fiscal year-end. Dividend payments of JPY 231M also contributed to the decline.
- This Quarter: We want to see how collection of receivables and advances tied to large-scale concerts, and payment of payables, progress in 3Q. Receipt of the sale proceeds should also lift cash and deposits at 3Q-end.
- Key Metrics: End-September accounts receivable, accounts payable, advances paid, and cash and deposits. The benchmark is prior-year end-September cash and deposits of JPY 4,010M.
Key Timely Disclosures During the Quarter
- 2026/10/09Production of a new series of KNTV original program "SUPER JUNIOR-Leeteuk's Solo Journey" confirmed - This strengthens proprietary original content in the Rights & Media business and aligns with efforts on viewer retention and churn prevention. Given the broadcast timing, any P&L contribution will likely come in 4Q or later, so it is not a 3Q checkpoint.
- 2026/08/20Publication of company introduction and business overview articles on the official IR "note" account - No direct earnings impact. We view it positively as enhanced IR communication aimed at improving understanding of the business structure.
Previous Quarter Results (FY12/2026 2Q Actual)
SM ENTERTAINMENT JAPAN Co.,Ltd. operates two segments. The Entertainment business handles domestic concerts and ancillary businesses for SM ENTERTAINMENT group artists. The Rights & Media business covers broadcasting such as KNTV and external content sales. Its medium-term management plan aims to multiply and layer ancillary revenue streams and transform the company into an owner of proprietary IP. Through developing GPP and virtual artist Kiepi, it is moving into a phase of proving the "repeatability of hits." In 1H, a concentration of large-scale concerts drove higher revenue and profit, and recurring profit exceeded the full-year plan.
