MOD contract more than triples AxelGlobe revenue; focus shifts to rebuilding commercial operations and securing funding after GRUS-3 impairment

PublishedOctober 15, 2026 at 20:02 GMT+9

Key Positives From The 1Q Results

Revenue reached JPY 950M (+208.3% YoY) and gross profit turned positive at JPY 374M, marking an inflection point in the earnings structure. AxelGlobe drove the improvement. It began recognizing revenue as the Ministry of Defense (MOD) "Satellite Constellation Development and Operation Project" progressed, and segment profit swung to a JPY 234M surplus. The GRUS-3 malfunction triggered an impairment, but the improvement in core profitability is clear in the numbers.

  • Gross Margin Recovery
: Gross Profit Margin improved to 39.4% (prior year: -5.5%). AxelGlobe gross profit of JPY 856M more than offset AxelLiner's gross loss.
  • AxelGlobe Profitable After R&D
: The MOD contract, orders from existing customers and progress on METI-commissioned research kept AxelGlobe in the black. This held even after absorbing R&D costs for three high-resolution satellites.
  • Narrower Operating Loss
: Operating loss narrowed by JPY 236M YoY to JPY -826M. SG&A was contained at JPY 1,201M (+14.8% YoY).
  • Healthy GRUS-3 Units Preserve Upside
: Of the seven GRUS-3 satellites, the three without defects are targeted for commercial operation from February 2027, preserving a revenue opportunity.
  • Covenant Risk Deferred
: Under the Mizuho Bank facility, the covenant requiring a profit has been pushed back from FY5/27 to FY5/29 onward. This reduces near-term breach risk.

Key Concerns From The 1Q Results

Four GRUS-3 satellites malfunctioned, and the company booked a JPY 1,879M impairment loss as an extraordinary loss. Net loss widened to JPY -2,784M and net assets fell to JPY 4,244M. The delayed start of imagery delivery and uncertainty over the Pale Blue contract led management to cut the full-year revenue plan by 25.6% from the previous forecast. The filing also flags events or conditions that cast significant doubt on the company's ability to continue as a going concern. Funding stability is therefore the key issue.

  • AxelLiner Revenue Reversal
: After receiving a contract termination notice from Pale Blue, the company reversed revenue. AxelLiner booked negative revenue of JPY -63M, and segment loss widened to JPY -615M.
  • New Loss Provision
: A new JPY 68M provision for project losses confirms AxelLiner's deteriorating profitability.
  • Shrinking Cash Cushion
: Cash and deposits fell JPY 2,413M from the prior fiscal year-end to JPY 3,402M. Headroom is narrowing against the SMBC covenant requiring cash of at least JPY 2B at each quarter-end.
  • Rising Advance Payments
: Advance payments rose to JPY 4,013M (+JPY 849M). Satellite launches and component orders continue to tie up cash.
  • Lower Equity Ratio, Dilution Risk
: The equity ratio fell to 37.7% (-10.0pt vs. prior year-end). The stock acquisition rights with an exercise price adjustment clause, announced the same day, are dilutive.

Focus Areas / Items To Monitor Going Forward

  • Commercial Launch Of Healthy Units
: Whether the three healthy satellites start commercial operation on schedule in February 2027. The AxelGlobe full-year revenue plan of JPY 4,240M assumes a ramp-up in GRUS-3 imagery delivery on top of the MOD contract.
  • Pale Blue Outcome And AxelLiner Recovery
: The outcome of talks with Pale Blue and AxelLiner's earnings recovery, anchored by NEDO-commissioned research. AxelLiner has already used 49.6% of its full-year segment loss budget of JPY -1,240M in 1Q (our estimate).
  • Warrant Exercise And Liquidity
: The pace of exercise of the 12th Series Stock Acquisition Rights and the trend in liquidity. Key items are compliance with the JPY 2B cash covenant and access to the JPY 2,939M undrawn credit facility.
Discussion Points For Management
  • Progress on the GRUS-3 root-cause investigation, and how findings will feed into the design of the three high-resolution satellites slated for launch in FY5/28
  • The revenue recognition schedule for the MOD satellite constellation project, and how far the GRUS-3 malfunction affects contract performance
  • Expected proceeds from the 12th Series Stock Acquisition Rights, priorities for use of funds and the approach to financial covenants
  • The outlook for talks with Pale Blue, and potential upside from the revised plan that reflects the "maximum impact"
  • The possibility of recovering losses through satellite insurance, and plans to procure and launch replacement satellites

There was no subsidy income in 1Q, so total income equaled revenue. The operating loss narrowed, but the JPY 1,879M impairment on four GRUS-3 satellites roughly doubled the net loss YoY. The wider EPS loss reflects the larger net loss. The IPO lifted the average share count from 47.47M to 66.66M shares, which limited the increase in the per-share loss.

Performance By Business Segment

AxelGlobe posted a sharp increase in both revenue and profit on the MOD contract, underpinning consolidated results. By contrast, AxelLiner booked negative revenue after reversing revenue on the Pale Blue contract, and its loss widened. Following the March 2026 reorganization, R&D costs for in-house commercial satellites are now booked under AxelGlobe. Prior-year figures have been restated on the new basis.

Strong Performers
  • AxelGlobe (MOD): The "Satellite Constellation Development and Operation Project" won last fiscal year progressed, lifting revenue to JPY 1,014M from JPY 29M a year earlier. The company is participating in a national program worth JPY 283.1B in total over roughly five years. This provides a medium-term revenue base.
  • AxelGlobe (Existing Customers / METI-Commissioned Research): Orders from existing customers and progress on METI-commissioned research also contributed, delivering gross profit of JPY 856M. The segment stayed profitable even after absorbing R&D costs for three high-resolution satellites.
Underperformers
  • AxelLiner (Pale Blue Contract): The company received a written notice regarding contract termination and opened talks. It reversed revenue given uncertainty over whether the contract will continue, leaving revenue at JPY -63M. Cost of goods sold of JPY 417M (+56.0% YoY) remained, resulting in a gross loss of JPY 481M.
  • AxelGlobe (GRUS-3 Satellite Assets): Of the seven satellites launched in July 2026, four developed defects in downloading imagery data via the high-speed communication system. Commercial operation of these units was deemed difficult, and the company booked a JPY 1,879M impairment. Imagery delivery is expected to start later than planned, and the full-year segment revenue plan was cut by 30.3% from the previous forecast.

Progress Versus Full-Year Guidance

Revenue progress stands at 14.2%, slightly ahead of 12.3% in 1Q last year (our estimate). However, hitting the plan requires JPY 5,749M of revenue from 2Q onward. That assumes continued revenue recognition on AxelGlobe's MOD contract and the start of operations for the healthy GRUS-3 satellites. Driven by the one-off impairment, the net loss already reached 76.3% of the full-year plan in 1Q. That leaves room for only JPY -865M of net loss over the remaining three quarters (our estimate). Subsidy income of JPY 1,210M accounts for the gap between the total income and revenue plans. Its timing will determine where recurring profit lands.

AxelLiner RevenueJPY -63MJPY 2,460M-
AxelLiner Segment LossJPY -615MJPY -1,240M49.6% (loss consumption)
  • Year-End Concentration
: Last fiscal year, 4Q standalone revenue of JPY 1,541M accounted for 61.4% of the full-year total, with revenue concentrated at year-end (our estimate). Project progress and the timing of subsidy income make quarterly results highly volatile.

Changes To Guidance

The 1Q earnings release contained no further revisions. Guidance was already cut on October 6, 2026 following the malfunction of four GRUS-3 satellites and the start of talks with Pale Blue. The company says the revised plan reflects the maximum impact that can be estimated at this point.

  • Revenue
    : Previous JPY 9,000M → New JPY 6,700M
  • Operating Income
    : Previous JPY -800M → New JPY -2,300M
  • Net Income
    : Previous JPY -240M → New JPY -3,650M
  • Reasons For Revision
: Delayed GRUS-3 imagery delivery cut the AxelGlobe revenue plan from JPY 6,080M to JPY 4,240M. The Pale Blue contract cut the AxelLiner revenue plan from JPY 2,920M to JPY 2,460M. The JPY 1,879M impairment widened the net loss by JPY 3,410M.

Commentary On Shareholder Returns

The FY5/27 dividend forecast remains unchanged at JPY 0.00, with no dividend paid. In 1Q, the company drew down JPY 17,906M of capital reserve to offset accumulated deficits. Retained earnings improved from JPY -15,322M to JPY -200M, with no impact on total shareholders' equity.

Financial Position

The impairment and operating loss reduced both net assets and cash. Interest-bearing debt of JPY 4,505M now exceeds cash of JPY 3,402M, leaving a net debt position of JPY 1,103M (our estimate). The filing still flags events or conditions that cast significant doubt on the going concern assumption. Financial stability will hinge on access to the JPY 2,939M undrawn credit facility and progress in raising funds through the stock acquisition rights.
