NIHON DENGI CO.,LTD. 2Q Earnings Preview

With HVAC instrumentation orders expanding and the backlog building, this quarter will test whether 1H revenue conversion and a gross margin around 47% can be sustained

PublishedOctober 30, 2026 at 15:30 GMT+9

Summary

1Q revenue grew only +3.2% YoY. Orders, however, jumped +30.8%, and the HVAC instrumentation business backlog rose +37.1%, giving stronger visibility on future revenue. The primary focus for 2Q results is how much of this backlog, led by retrofit projects, converts into 1H revenue. Gross Profit Margin improved 4.8pt YoY to 47.0%, and we want to see whether this profitability holds in 2Q. The company plan assumes margins from 2Q onward will fall below prior-year levels, so we will use 2Q to gauge how achievable the plan is. Project completions and handovers are seasonally concentrated in 4Q. The interim period therefore serves as the midpoint for assessing the full-year outcome, and orders, profitability and SG&A should be evaluated together.

Key Points for Next Quarter

Key Points & FocusImplications

Earnings Progress1H cumulative revenue and Recurring Profit, and progress against the full-year plan

1Q Recurring Profit progress was 15.0%, above 11.2% in the prior-year period (our estimate). Whether 1H Recurring Profit exceeds the prior-year JPY 4,297M is the benchmark for judging the full-year plan of JPY 12,700M.

Orders & BacklogHVAC instrumentation orders and backlog, split by new construction and retrofit

1Q backlog built to JPY 36,529M (+37.1%). If order momentum continues into 2Q, it would further support the +11.1% revenue growth assumed in the full-year plan.

ProfitabilityYoY trends in Gross Profit Margin and segment margins

1Q Gross Profit Margin was 47.0% (42.2% in the prior-year period). The company plan assumes an Operating Income Margin of 25.1% from 2Q onward, below 27.8% in the prior-year period. The key question is whether there is upside (both figures our estimates).

CostsYoY trends in SG&A and corporate expenses

1Q SG&A was JPY 2,329M (+1.7%). Corporate expenses narrowed to -JPY 1,282M from -JPY 1,331M a year earlier. We will check the balance between fixed-cost growth, including personnel expenses, and Gross Profit growth.

Second PillarIndustrial systems business revenue and segment profit

1Q segment profit was JPY 209M (+96.4%), with the margin rising to 20.3% (our estimate). Backlog stood at JPY 4,221M (+41.0%); we will check whether profit expansion continues in 2Q.

Key Issues from Previous Results (1Q FY3/2027)

1Q revenue was JPY 8,696M (+3.2%), while Operating Income rose to JPY 1,756M (+39.4%) and Recurring Profit to JPY 1,911M (+41.2%), a sharp earnings increase. The main driver was Gross Profit Margin improvement. Orders of JPY 15,971M (+30.8%) and the growing backlog demonstrate the depth of the order book underpinning this fiscal year's plan (revenue +11.1%, Recurring Profit +4.7%). For the interim period, the key issues are conversion of the backlog into revenue and the sustainability of margins.

1. 1H Cumulative Progress Against the Full-Year Plan

  • Previous Quarter
: 1Q Recurring Profit of JPY 1,911M represents 15.0% progress against the full-year plan of JPY 12,700M (vs. 11.2% in the prior-year period, measured against the prior fiscal year's actual results; both our estimates). Revenue progress was 16.9% (our estimate).
  • What to Check This Quarter
: Prior-year 1H revenue was JPY 18,668M and Recurring Profit JPY 4,297M. On a standalone 2Q basis, revenue was JPY 10,244M and Recurring Profit JPY 2,944M (both our estimates). We will assess the increment over these prior-year figures.
  • Key Metrics
: YoY change in 1H cumulative revenue and Recurring Profit, Guidance Achievement Rate, and any revision to full-year Guidance.
1Q profit progress exceeded the prior-year pace. Given the seasonal concentration of completions and handovers in 4Q, the 1H cumulative YoY comparison will be the first real indicator of the full-year plan's achievability.

2. HVAC Instrumentation Orders, Backlog and Revenue Conversion of New Construction Projects

  • Previous Quarter
: Orders were JPY 14,776M (+30.7%), comprising new construction of JPY 3,978M (+46.3%) and retrofit of JPY 10,797M (+25.7%), driven by factories and data centers. Revenue diverged sharply: new construction fell to JPY 2,612M (-29.1%), while retrofit rose to JPY 5,055M (+30.9%).
  • What to Check This Quarter
: New construction backlog increased to JPY 17,474M (+44.1%). We will check whether this feeds a recovery in new construction revenue from 2Q onward. Whether retrofit revenue growth continues in 2Q is another key focus.
  • Key Metrics
: 1H cumulative orders (new construction vs. retrofit), backlog (YoY), and YoY revenue by new construction and retrofit.
Both orders and backlog grew by more than 30%. In new construction, orders expanded while revenue declined on a tough prior-year comparison. The focus is on which quarter the timing gap will show up in.

3. Sustainability of Gross Profit Margin and Profitability Assumptions in the Company Plan

  • Previous Quarter
: Gross Profit Margin was 47.0% (42.2% in the prior-year period). The HVAC instrumentation segment margin was 36.9% (32.9% in the prior-year period; both our estimates). Prior-year 1H cumulative Gross Profit Margin was 45.2%, and the prior-year standalone 2Q figure was 47.7% (our estimates).
  • What to Check This Quarter
: Subtracting 1Q actuals from the full-year plan implies 2Q–4Q revenue of +12.8%, Operating Income of +1.7% and Recurring Profit of +0.1% (our estimates). The plan assumes an Operating Income Margin of 25.1% for the remaining period, below 27.8% a year earlier, which we will compare against 2Q profitability (our estimates). If growth in Recurring Profit and Net Income diverges, we will examine the breakdown of extraordinary items and income taxes.
  • Key Metrics
: 1H cumulative Gross Profit Margin, HVAC instrumentation segment margin, and YoY Operating Income Margin.
The 1Q profit increase came from Gross Profit Margin improvement, and the HVAC instrumentation segment margin also rose. The company plan, however, assumes lower margins than the prior year from 2Q onward. The gap between actual results and the plan will determine the upside potential.

4. SG&A and Corporate Expense Trends

  • Previous Quarter
: SG&A was JPY 2,329M (+1.7%). Corporate expenses were -JPY 1,282M (-JPY 1,331M in the prior-year period). Depreciation was JPY 69M (JPY 108M in the prior-year period).
  • What to Check This Quarter
: Prior-year 1H cumulative SG&A was JPY 4,299M, with standalone 2Q at JPY 2,008M (our estimate). We will check whether SG&A growth, including personnel expenses, stays within the pace of Gross Profit growth.
  • Key Metrics
: YoY change in 1H cumulative SG&A, corporate expenses and Operating Income.
In 1Q, Gross Profit rose by JPY 535M while SG&A increased by only JPY 38M, amplifying the Operating Income gain. The trajectory of fixed costs, including engineer recruitment and training, will shape profit growth from 2Q onward.

5. Profit Growth in the Industrial Systems Business

  • Previous Quarter
: Revenue was JPY 1,028M (+17.1%) and segment profit JPY 209M (+96.4%). The margin was 20.3% (12.1% in the prior-year period; both our estimates). Orders were JPY 1,195M (+32.0%), driven by work ancillary to production equipment and electrical work.
  • What to Check This Quarter
: We will check progress in working through the backlog of JPY 4,221M (+41.0%). The key question is whether revenue growth in electrical work and software supports margins on a 1H cumulative basis.
  • Key Metrics
: YoY change in 1H cumulative segment revenue and profit, orders, and backlog.
1Q delivered both revenue growth and a sharp margin increase. Orders and backlog are also growing, and we want to see whether the segment gains prominence as the second profit source after HVAC instrumentation.

Key Timely Disclosures During the Period

  • 2026/10/07
Inclusion in the TOPIX Index - No direct earnings impact. However, it could improve share supply-demand dynamics through passive fund inflows and enhanced liquidity.
  • 2026/09/28
Secondary Offering of Shares (offering price determined on 2026/10/06) - As a sale of existing shares, the key issues are the short-term supply-demand impact and changes in shareholder composition. The profile and size of the selling shareholders should be confirmed in the disclosure text.,
  • 2026/08/26
Increase in New Graduate Starting Salaries and Improved Employee Compensation - Starting salaries will rise by a flat JPY 30,000, and monthly base pay for eligible employees by JPY 10,000–30,000. This supports engineer recruitment but adds to personnel costs. Alongside the SG&A and cost trends in Issue 4, we will check from which quarter the impact appears in the P&L.

Previous Quarter Results (1Q FY3/2027 Actual)

The company's core business is HVAC instrumentation, centered on automatic HVAC control for buildings. Its second pillar is the industrial systems business, covering instrumentation and automatic control work for factories and conveyor lines. Orders expanded, led by factories, data centers and hospitality facilities. 1Q orders rose +30.8% YoY, and the HVAC instrumentation backlog reached JPY 36,529M. Because completions and handovers are concentrated in 4Q, 1Q–3Q revenue is relatively small. Nevertheless, 1Q delivered a sharp profit increase on improved Gross Profit Margin. The full-year plan (revenue of JPY 51,500M, Recurring Profit of JPY 12,700M) was left unchanged. The earnings release does not disclose progress on the medium-term management plan.
