Nittetsu Mining Co., Ltd. 2Q Earnings Flash

Higher copper prices nearly tripled Metals operating income, and 1H revenue and net income hit record highs. With full-year guidance now raised, progress on the Arqueros mine ramp-up is the next focus.

PublishedNovember 6, 2026 at 20:06 GMT+9

Key Positives From The 2Q Results

Copper averaged 622.44¢/lb (+42.1% YoY), lifting Metals operating income to JPY 3,458M (+196.7% YoY). That gain absorbed both the absence of last year's real estate sale gains and lower Minerals profit. Better smelting by-product revenue and higher sales premiums also helped. Operating income, net income and dividend guidance were all revised up, which signals a clearer commitment to shareholder returns and capital efficiency.

  • Record 1H Results
: 1H revenue was JPY 113,293M (+21.7% YoY) and net income JPY 7,608M (+14.9% YoY). Both are record highs for a first half (company disclosure).
  • Price Factors Offset Volume
: In the company's operating income bridge, copper price/terms added +JPY 1.8B and unit price/mix +JPY 2.2B. Together they more than offset a -JPY 2.1B volume drag.
  • Full-Year OP Guidance Raised 12.9%
: The full-year operating income plan rose from JPY 14,000M to JPY 15,800M. The copper price assumption moved from 550¢/lb to 620¢/lb, and higher metal prices should absorb the impact of the Arqueros delay.
  • Cross-Shareholding Unwind Accelerated
: Faster sales of strategic shareholdings produced a JPY 3,993M gain on sale of investment securities. Trimming non-core assets fed directly into the upward revisions to net income and the dividend.
  • Dividend Hike and Buyback
: The annual dividend forecast rose from JPY 62 to JPY 75, above the prior year's JPY 71.40. The company also bought back 2,156,400 shares in 1H, further enhancing returns.

Key Concerns From The 2Q Results

2Q standalone operating income was JPY 3,432M, down 30.9% YoY (our estimate) and below 1Q's JPY 5,088M. Lower profit at mineral subsidiaries, yen strength at the smelter and lower volumes all weighed on the quarter. Whether underlying earnings are recovering, excluding price effects, remains to be confirmed. Interest-bearing debt rose to JPY 77,077M (+23.7% vs. prior FY-end) as growth capex front-loads. The timing of Arqueros monetization will determine when the balance sheet returns to cruising speed.

  • Volumes Down Across the Board
: 1H volumes fell 4.4% for limestone, 8.9% for electrolytic copper and 14.6% for copper concentrate. Volume factors cut operating income by JPY 2.1B.
  • Recurring Profit Down
: Recurring profit was JPY 8,550M (-10.6%). Equity-method results swung from +JPY 577M a year earlier to -JPY 445M, and interest expense more than doubled to JPY 559M.
  • Net Income Growth Driven by One-Offs
: Net income growth came from a one-off gain on investment securities. Recurring profit declined, so core earnings growth is not yet visible.
  • Arqueros Delayed
: Arqueros production start is expected to slip by about six months (assumption), with full consolidated contribution from 2H FY27 (company disclosure). Construction in progress has built up to JPY 62,478M.
  • Negative FCF
: Operating CF of JPY 6,072M compared with investing CF of -JPY 17,023M. FCF was therefore -JPY 10,951M (our estimate), leaving the company reliant on borrowings.

Focus Areas / Items To Monitor Going Forward

  • Arqueros Mine Milestones
: Grid power is targeted for end-November, followed by standalone tests of large equipment such as the ball mill and then integrated plant-wide testing. The question is whether production can begin within FY26. The timing of contribution after a roughly three-month ramp-up underpins next year's earnings assumptions.
  • Metals Segment in 2H
: 1H delivered JPY 3,458M against a full-year plan of JPY 7,900M. That implies 2H of JPY 4,442M (our estimate), above the 1H level. We need to confirm that the 620¢/lb copper assumption and by-product revenue hold, alongside FX effects at the smelter.
  • Balance Between Investment and Returns
: Net interest-bearing debt rose from JPY 18,847M at the prior FY-end to JPY 43,211M (our estimate). We want clarity on the 40% payout ratio policy, the continuity of buybacks and the remaining room to sell strategic shareholdings.
Discussion Points For Management
  • How firm is the Arqueros production start date? What would further delays mean for earnings, and would additional capex be required?
  • What is the outlook for total Arqueros development capex, and when will interest-bearing debt and interest expense peak?
  • How sustainable are the gains in smelting by-product revenue and sales premiums? What is the outlook for next year's TC/RC negotiations?
  • What drove the deterioration in equity-method results? What is the full-year impact of production cuts at Hibi Kyodo Smelting?
  • What is the demand outlook behind lower limestone sales (steel -5.3%), and what is the pricing pass-through policy?
  • What is the future scale and timeline for selling strategic shareholdings, and how will the proceeds be used?

Revenue rose about 20% on higher domestic selling prices for electrolytic copper. Gross margin fell, however, because electrolytic copper is a low-margin product and its larger share worsened the mix. Operating income was flat YoY. Higher Metals profit was offset by the loss of real estate sale gains (-JPY 1,645M) and lower Minerals profit. Net income still grew, as extraordinary gains covered the deterioration in equity-method results.

Performance By Business Segment

Metals accounted for 60.2% of consolidated revenue and drove most of the top-line growth. At the operating level, Metals' +JPY 2,293M gain was almost entirely offset by a combined -JPY 2,346M decline in Real Estate, Minerals and Machinery & Environment. Overseas revenue rose to JPY 24,988M (+11.8%), led by copper concentrate to Chile and electrolytic copper to India, Taiwan and China.

Strong Performers
  • Metals – Smelting (Electrolytic Copper): Revenue was JPY 47,328M (+42.2%). Higher domestic selling prices absorbed an 8.9% volume decline, while better by-product revenue and sales premiums drove profit growth.
  • Metals – Mining (Copper Concentrate): Revenue was JPY 11,202M (+22.0%). A 1Q plant breakdown cut volumes by 14.6%, but the 42.1% rise in copper prices still delivered higher revenue and profit.
  • Metals – Other: Revenue was JPY 9,798M (+72.8%). Higher electrolytic gold volumes and prices captured the benefit of strong metal prices.
  • Environmental Products: Revenue was JPY 6,379M (+14.1%). Price increases took hold, led by the flagship water treatment agent "Polytetsu".
  • Minerals – Fuel and Other: Revenue was JPY 10,288M (+13.0%). Higher prices for petroleum products and subsidiary revenue growth supported Minerals' top line.
Underperformers
  • Limestone: Volume was 10,525 kt (-4.4%) and revenue fell 0.9%. Demand was weak, with steel down 5.3% and aggregates/other down 6.1%, and price increases could not offset the lower volumes.
  • Minerals Profit: Lower limestone sales combined with weaker profits at some subsidiaries cut operating income by JPY 574M. This was one of the main drivers of the 2Q standalone decline.
  • Machinery & Environment Profit: Surging raw material costs for water treatment agents cut operating income by 12.1%. Industrial Machinery revenue also fell 5.8% on lower subsidiary sales.
  • Real Estate: Operating income fell 64.6% against last year's sale of real estate held for sale. The segment has returned to a normal, rental-driven run rate.
  • Renewable Energy: Higher repair costs in geothermal and lower solar revenue cut operating income by 8.5%. Power generation was 105k MWh (prior year: 106k MWh).

Progress Versus Full-Year Guidance

Operating income stands at 53.9% of the revised full-year plan, ahead of 45.6% in the prior-year period (our estimate). However, the plan implies 2H operating income of JPY 7,280M, below 1H's JPY 8,520M. This conservative structure factors in sluggish Minerals and Real Estate, plus an FX assumption of JPY 155/USD versus a 1H average of JPY 159.37. Metals is at 43.8% progress, with the plan weighted toward 2H. If 2H copper holds near the 620¢/lb assumption, the plan looks highly achievable. Every 10¢/lb rise in copper adds JPY 120M to operating income (company disclosure).

(Prior-year progress rates were 44.4% for revenue, 47.3% for recurring profit and 47.2% for net income, all our estimates.)

  • 2H-Weighted Profile
: Last fiscal year, operating income was JPY 8,585M in 1H and JPY 10,241M in 2H, so 2H carried the larger share (our estimate).
  • Consolidation Lag
: The Arqueros mine is consolidated with a three-month lag (company disclosure). Production start on site will therefore reach consolidated results only after a delay.
  • Smelting FX Exposure
: Smelting is exposed to FX differences over its 3–4 month lead time from procurement to sale, as well as to period-end inventory valuation. Yen appreciation weighs on profit (company disclosure).

Changes To Guidance

Full-year guidance was revised upward, replacing figures announced on May 13, 2026. Higher metal prices, led by copper, and higher by-product prices more than absorb the drag from the delayed Arqueros start. Profit was raised at every level, while only revenue was cut.

  • Revenue
    : JPY 232,500M → JPY 229,000M
  • Operating Income
    : JPY 14,000M → JPY 15,800M
  • Recurring Profit
    : JPY 11,500M → JPY 14,800M
  • Net Income
    : JPY 12,000M → JPY 14,500M
  • EPS
    : JPY 152.51 → JPY 187.07
  • Reasons for Revision
: Operating income reflects +JPY 2.0B in Metals (better smelting by-product revenue and higher copper prices at Atacama) and +JPY 400M in adjustments, partly offset by -JPY 1.0B in Minerals. Recurring profit benefits from items such as lower interest expense due to the Arqueros delay. Net income benefits from larger gains on sale of investment securities. The revenue cut reflects -JPY 4.4B in Metals, driven by production cuts at Hibi Kyodo Smelting and the Arqueros delay.

Commentary On Shareholder Returns

  • Dividend
: The interim dividend is JPY 38 and the year-end forecast JPY 37, for an annual JPY 75. That is JPY 13 above the previous forecast of JPY 62 and above the prior year's JPY 71.40 (split-adjusted).
  • Payout Ratio
: The payout ratio is 40.1% (our estimate), in line with the policy of a ~40% consolidated payout ratio and a floor of JPY 34 per share.
  • Share Buyback
: Under a February 27, 2026 board resolution, the company acquired 2,156,400 shares, increasing treasury stock by JPY 5,914M. Treasury shares stood at 3,456,991 at period-end.
  • Total Returns
: 1H dividend payments were JPY 3,783M and buyback outlays JPY 5,931M (company disclosure). Total shareholder returns exceeded the prior-year period.

Financial Position

The equity ratio remains healthy at 49.1%. However, Arqueros development and the acquisition of a US subsidiary pushed up long-term borrowings, and growth capex continues to be debt-funded. Higher market values of investment securities lifted valuation differences on available-for-sale securities, increasing shareholders' equity.
